Pixie is a 17 year old Wombat who lives at Queens Park Nature Centre. A few weeks ago, her carers noticed that she wasn’t eating properly and appeared to be losing weight. Pixie was bought in to the hospital where she was sedated to allow us to examine her. Despite their cute appearance, wombats are not particularly friendly and can be quite aggressive when handled.
Once she was sleepy we were able to perform a comprehensive examination. Inspection of her mouth revealed a large gum-nut had be- come firmly wedged over the lower incisor teeth. The rough edges of the nut had caused dam- age to Pixies gums and was obviously rendering her unable to eat.
The gum nut was removed and fortunately her teeth were healthy underneath. The injuries to her gums were cleaned and flushed.
Pixie was given antibiotics to treat the infected wound in her mouth. She also received painkillers to help her feel more comfortable. Once the sedative had worn off, she was discharged back to her carers to recover from her ordeal.
Within a few days Pixie was eating well and back to normal.
