‘Bruno’ is a 3-year-old Cattle Dog who recently came to see us after suffering a most unfortunate accident. While helping out his owners with some reupholstering, he was shot in the head with a 4cm staple.
On examination ‘Bruno’ was understandably sore over the front of his head and was a little reluctant to let anyone have too close a look. Remarkably, however, he was quite bright and alert, was up and walking around and had lost very little blood. Our first concern was to deal with ’Bruno’s’ obvious pain with some pain-killers and to start the fight against infection with some antibiotics. He was then scheduled for immediate x-rays in an attempt to find out exactly how deeply the staple had penetrated.
‘Bruno’s’ spectacular x-rays revealed the metallic staple had passed completely through the skin, soft tissue and muscle at the front of the skull and had become embedded in the bone of his frontal sinuses. Despite the close proximity to the brain, his normal neurological state suggested that if the staple could be removed, ‘Bruno’ had a good chance of making a full recovery.
Surgery was scheduled for the next day. ‘Bruno’ placed on a drip to maintain his blood pressure during surgery and knocked out using an intra-venous injection. We passed a ET tube down his airway to supply him with oxygen and anaesthetic gas and prepped the area of skin surrounding the point of entry.
After several tense moments the staple was located and, after much effort, was finally extracted from the bone at the front of his skull. The wound was then flushed and closed with a few sutures. ‘Bruno’ recovered well from his anaesthetic and went home on extended courses of pain-killers and antibiotics. He has since gone on to make a full recovery and shows no lingering effects from his ordeal.
